Hailing from Toronto, DJ MelBoogie is one of the country’s best-known urban female DJs. For almost 20 years, her roots have been deeply embedded in college radio, formerly at CHRY 105.5FM, where she and DJ Manifest set the prime time morning airwaves on fire for 6 years, followed by a decade at CKLN 88.1FM, as the DJ/Co-Host of Droppin’ Dimez Radio, Canada’s ONLY All Female Hip Hop Show. She has also hosted several events in the GTA community, including the Toronto Annual Graffiti Expo, Canadian Music Week, North By North East Indie Showcase (presented by NOW Magazine), and has been a speaker/panelist at a variety of music industry conferences. She has also made several television appearances, including Much Music, New Music, MTV Canada, Toronto Life, and Fashion Television‘s spin-off, Ooh-La-La. She’s also opened for some of hip hop’s most respected artists, including Busta Rhymes, Q-Tip and M.O.P.
MelBoogie can be heard weekly on Droppin’ Dimez, Canada’s ONLY all-female
hip hop show, alongside DJ/Co-Host JJ Rock on www.Bad-Perm.com.
Mel has been the resident DJ for Honey Jam, Canada’s longest-running all female showcase (www.phemphat.com), since it launched in 1995, and is Canada’s first female CORE DJ. In 2008, Mel won the Stylus Female DJ of the Year Award, naming her the top female DJ in Canada, and was the only DJ selected to participate in Luminato’s Mille Femmes Exhibit, dedicated to Toronto’s most inspiring women in the creative arts, presented by L’Oreal. In 2011, she was the only female DJ nominated in 3 categories, and took home two awards, one for Underground DJ of the Year, and the other for College Radio Show of the Year, for DD Radio. She was also recognized by Manifesto as a pioneer in hiphop, as part of their WombManifesto event.
2011 marked another first for Mel, as she collaborated with legendary Toronto MCs Kish, Dan-e-o, and Maestro Fresh Wes to release her first single, Vapors 2012. Additionally, she is the only female DJ to be a repeated feature guest on Toronto’s FLOW 93.5FM.
Dedicated to developing independent artists and urban music in Canada, Mel is an advisory board member for the JUNOs’ Rap Category, and is the Communications Director for UMAC, the Urban Music Association of Canada.
